I had a hard time changing anything on the Softail , because Bruce and I have basically the same likes and dislikes. The basic families of Harley Davidson motorcycles include Touring, Softails, Dynas, V-rods and Sportsters. There are many variations within the different families.

Harley Davidson Heritage Softail: The motorcycle is a 2002 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic (FLSTC). A friend of mine was the second owner of this bike . He bought it approx 3 years ago. He purchased it from a friend on the spur of the moment. He soon realized that he didn't want all of the leather bags and passenger seat. The Harley that he should have bought was the Softail Fatboy (FLSTF) this is the bike made popular by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Terminator 2.That is the bike he takes from the biker at the bar.
In the world of Harley, for the most part a Softail ,is a Softail, is a Softail. Meaning that if you have a Softail you can transform it into another variation of a Softail. So my friend purchased the sheet metal that he wanted  along with several other pieces to make it "his own". A person can go to a Harley shop to buy a brand new motorcycle, get the badest boy on the block, right now it would be a Screaming Eagle variation of the different "families" of motorcycles and he will change something or add a piece of chrome to make it "his own" before he takes delivery. That is just a part of the Harley Davidson culture.
My friend that I got this "scooter" from was born in 1955, so he decided to go with 1955 vintage looking parts, note the raised metal Harley logos on the sides of the fuel tank. He took a Heritage Softail Classic and turned it into a nostalgic Fatboy. I call the creation a Fat Heritage. I always name my motorcycles. I also have a 1997 Electra-glide Classic her name is "Carmen Electra Glide". I bought this one from my friend Bruce Bohler, I  have named it "The Bohler Express".

It is one of the two remaining American mass-producers of motorcycles (along with Victory Motorcycles). The company emphasizes heavy bikes designed for cruising and known for their distinctive exhaust note.

Harley-Davidson motorcycles (popularly known as "Harleys") are distinctive in both design and sound. Harley-Davidson motorcycles attract a loyal following (in marketing terms, the owners form a brand community).

The Motor Company supplies many domestic police forces with their motorcycle fleets. Harleys are especially noted for the tradition of heavy customization that gave rise to the chopper-style of motorcycle.

The crankshaft has a single pin, and both pistons are connected to this pin through their connecting rods. This design causes the pistons to fire at uneven intervals.

On the V-twin, the sequence is as follows:

1) the first piston fires (this is the 0 position)
2) the other piston fires at 315 into the stroke
3) there is a 405 gap (as both cylinders go through their exhaust stroke) until the first piston fires again
This design, which is covered under several United States patents, gives the Harley-Davidson V-twin its unique "potato-potato" sound.

On 1 February 1994, the company filed a trademark application for the distinctive sound of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle engine: "The mark consists of the exhaust sound of applicant's motorcycles, produced by V-twin, common crankpin motorcycle engines when the goods are in use". Nine of Harley-Davidson's competitors filed comments opposing the application, arguing that cruiser-style motorcycles of various brands use a single-crankpin V-twin engine which produce a similar sound. These objections were followed by litigation. After six years, Harley-Davidson withdrew their trademark application.
